Brief History of Zodba Sangbo - Peace Walker
Hello, my name is Zodba Sangbo. I am an ethnic Tibetan from China. I was born on August 15 1979 in the village of Marthang in Tibet. I have one brother named Dawa, he is two years younger than me. My mother died of some kind of stomach ailment when I was about five or six years old. After her death, my brother and I were raised by our father and maternal grandparents. This was from about the age of ten until 1992.
During this time I assisted my grandparents with herding my family yaks. After that I went to Raja monastery where I learned to read and write Tibetan and Buddhist philosophy. After that I went to Lhasa, Tibet's capital city. I stayed there for four days in which I went to Potala Palace and Lhasa's Sera monastery to get a blessing. There, I met some village people, they helped me find a guide and I paid the guide in chinese 900.00 yuan. The day after this, we walked for eighteen days. We crossed into Nepal with 20 people and only had a small bag of roasted barley powder for all of us. We found a lake with a thin layer of ice on top. We used stones to break though the ice and than drink the water mixed with barley powder. During that time it was very difficult to walk because I was tired and my feet were messed up. We had crossed a lot of very big rivers and sands of the land, along with the highest snow mountain in the world, Mount Everest. The rocks and the mountains are some of the highest in the world. I came to India and stayed there for four years. After that, I came to the United States of America and now live in New York City. Because of China I had to leave my country and family and could not go back. I heard about the peace walk and had to do it. Please help us, help Tibet, thank you.
